SoundStone | Live Stone Carving | Darwin Fringe Festival 2021, Australia

A perfromance sculpture and sound collaboration between Ioanna and sculptor Gaia. Described as a mezmerising visual, sound and kinesthetic journey witnessing two artists create from stone and sound. In this 2 hour performance, sculptor, Ioanna transformed a raw limestone slab into a spectacular sculpture as producer and musician Gaia produced the sounds to inspire and amplify the experience. Performed and filmed at Happy Yess for the closing event of Darwin Fringe 2021.

Public Workshop | Lost Wax-casting in Recycled Aluminum

Ioanna has built an aluminum foundry and been training members of the community during an Artist Residency in Crystal Waters, Queensland. With a focus on sustainability, this foundry has been built using upcycled materials and reaches 700°C to recycle aluminum, including soda and beer cans.

This weekend workshops will open to the public to learn the ancient lost-wax casting technique to casting metal. Participants will be receiving step by step guidance through the process to transform wax motifs, tools and creations into solid aluminum.

Chisel and tomahawk to stone following the beat of the music. This live stone carving performance unfolded over three days through three blocks of stone. The inspiration for this piece was the music and energy of the crowd with Ioanna carving on stage as the vehicle for expression. The sound of Jamie Forest, LO’99, OKA and Late Nite Tuff Guy guided this piece with a curious and keen crowd of viewers.

For a debrief of this vibrant festival gathering, read Kate Stephenson’s feature here.

Performance | Corporate Carving at Rabbits Eat Lettuce

See Ioanna descend masked and wearing a suit to her elevated studio; a podium next to the mainstage emanating electronic bass. Punctual and disciplined, her suit and mask are swapped for a dusty boiler suit. You’ll see her carving the veins of the stone to the BPM of the music, an intense and cathartic feeding of the soul to be seen daily.

Corporate Carving demonstrates a corporate and creative conflict of the self. This performance is a site specific response to the mundanity of adulthood routine and the drive for expression we have within us.

Rabbits Eat Lettuce is a music and community festival held over on the indigenous lands of the Kabi Kabi peoples. This Easter weekend event is running Thu, 1 Apr 2021 – Sun, 4 Apr 2021 with a daily performance from Ioanna. Tickets and lineup for Rabbits Eat Lettuce can be accessed here.

Στούντιο καφέ | Open To The Public | Australia, Northcote

Step past the front gate and wander down the side alley of a quiet suburban house to find a tiny backyard shed.

Inside this shed you will connect, create and experience a system of exchange without currency.

Ioanna Thymianidis has spent isolation converting a shed into a studio, cafe and interaction space in Northcote, Melbourne.

Visitors can expect Greek coffee, tea and sweets… and getting your hands dirty sanding sculptures in exchange for your tab. Rest assured this space is designed to follow Covid-19 regulations. High levels of caution are taken with sterilisation, 1.5m of distance among other measures of safety.

The emphasis on Greece notes Ioanna’s heritage as she reconnects with her roots in this city. This theme also draws on a culture of gathering over rituals of eating and drinking while connecting.

Στούντιο Kαφέ is now open by appointment to the public June 6 - June 26. The only prerequisite to visit is interest to participate.

With the current travel ban, upcoming exhibitions will be delayed including ‘Terra Incognito’ at Galleri Kladden, Norway. Ioanna released the following statement:

“With a heavy heart, I'm announcing my upcoming projects and demonstrations will not go forward due to the heightened travel and quarantine restrictions.

My solo ‘Terra Incognito’ at Gallery Kladden, Oslo will be postponed until a later date. I'm taking this as an opportunity to deepen this body of work.

I'm so grateful to be based in Australia during this time. I will hit the road soon to document and create art about human nature during this pandemic.”

Christopher Deutscher - Deutscher and Hackett | Fine Art Auction

“This small group of found decaying wood fragments, delicately cast in bronze, examines (with a magnifying glass) the intersection of the natural and artificial worlds. There is a tenderness of treatment and placement of the fragments that creates another existence, a new and precious world.”
