IΩANNA has commenced a six week artist residency at LANDSLIDE Gallery. This Artist Run Initiative based in Wentworth Falls is known for supporting experimental and contemporary art practices. This residency will explore ancient technology, with particular attention to the mechanical and robotic creations attributed to Hephaestus, the ancient Greek god of fire, metalworking, and craftsmanship.
Central to this research are the Golden Mechanical Women, crafted by Hephaestus to assist in his forge and foundry. These Fembots are described in ancient texts as beings of skill and knowledge akin to artificial intelligence. Few visual representations of them exist.
Works will incorporate traditional techniques such as wood carving, lost wax casting, and stone carving, alongside modern 3D modelling and printing methods.
The residency will also include a public workshop in early January, where participants can engage with lost-wax casting techniques. The project will conclude with an exhibition at LANDSLIDE Gallery showcasing the works developed during this residency.
