poster ioanna meet me.jpg

Enter mEat Me, an immersive and participatory solo exhibition by artist IΩANNA. Begin your journey through a historic artist warehouse… once a working abattoir, before stepping inside a transformed school bus to encounter a world of personal mythologies. Through sculpture, painting, and installation, IΩANNA reveals intimate explorations of her own identity, offering a mirror for audiences to turn inward and awaken their creative spirit. Each session culminates in a ceremony akin to a summoning, channelling the tension between innovation and impermanence.

mEat Me runs with 5 shows July 12 - July 19.

IΩANNA presents, βιοτεχνολογία - Future Archeology, as part of her Artist Residency at LANDSLIDE Artist Run Initiative. The works reflect on the enduring and cyclical nature of innovation.

People's Choice Award & Third Prize for 'Logos Waking Up' | NCCA | Darwin, Australia

IΩANNA is honoured to have her artwork, Logos Waking Up, awarded the People’s Choice Award and Third Prize at the From Rubble to Resistance exhibition, curated by Zoë Slee at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art in Darwin (NCCA).

Judges, Alana Holmberg, Matthew van Roden and Tierney White made the following statement: “IOANNA has created a contemporary response to the theme, working with, and presenting within, modern technologies to explore a dystopian future. Unique and well-executed, Logos Waking Up playfully invokes a curiosity in viewers of all ages.

The artist's physical sculpture, Logos - also present as the viewer's companion in a virtual reality environment - invites the viewer to a possible local eventuation, a future of amalgamated artscapes reclaimed by the natural world. The work skilfully weaves through the virtual and the actual, moving material between both thresholds whilst playfully collaborating with Al.

Logos is a reminder that despite our despondency, there are many possible future worlds, and they are tied to the decisions we make now. The work is a bold and innovative embrace of the intersection of art and technology, and the judging panel were impressed with how it has engaged a new generation of art lovers.”

Artist Residency | LANDSLIDE | Wentworth Falls, NSW

IΩANNA has commenced a six week artist residency at LANDSLIDE Gallery. This Artist Run Initiative based in Wentworth Falls is known for supporting experimental and contemporary art practices. This residency will explore ancient technology, with particular attention to the mechanical and robotic creations attributed to Hephaestus, the ancient Greek god of fire, metalworking, and craftsmanship.

Central to this research are the Golden Mechanical Women, crafted by Hephaestus to assist in his forge and foundry. These Fembots are described in ancient texts as beings of skill and knowledge akin to artificial intelligence. Few visual representations of them exist.

Works will incorporate traditional techniques such as wood carving, lost wax casting, and stone carving, alongside modern 3D modelling and printing methods.

The residency will also include a public workshop in early January, where participants can engage with lost-wax casting techniques. The project will conclude with an exhibition at LANDSLIDE Gallery showcasing the works developed during this residency.

Logos Waking Up | Suar Wood Carving, Digital Screens and Augmented Reality Multimedia | 2024

What comes before and after?

A response to contemporary defeatism. People tell me they don’t recycle or vote because our world is already doomed. I present you with an eventuation of our familiar Darwin environment. One where our creations amalgamate with the natural environment. Nature reclaims. Data comes in many forms.

Logos, our protagonist and your companion, is an anchor in our reality and the Augmented one I present to you. Logos emerged after asking an Artificial Intelligent program to create a self portrait.

Artist Statement

“Primordial Enigma delves into the interplay between reality and the subconscious, where shapes from dreams and imagination materialise into tangible forms. I sculpt representations of these ephemeral forms that inhabit my artistic visions. Familiar shapes transform and merge into enigmatic entities—sometimes resembling fungi, body parts, or even entire creatures.

These fluid forms emerge from the solidity of the wood, inviting you into a realm of interpretation and projection onto my personal narratives.

My mentor and his workers laughed when I chose this piece of wood for it's various knots and eyes. I followed these features to guide the form using chainsaw and chisels. The process is a collaboration between artist and material, each stroke of the tool is a dialogue with the medium, a dance between intention and spontaneity to bring these forms to fruition.”

Exhibiting | Group shows across Australia

Exhibiting across Australia. Images left to right; Drip lick, Logos, Masked.

Drip lick | Unique Bronze | 2020

Melbourne

An eerie twist on the classic reclined nude. Drip Lick strips this sharp figure back to her mechanical and raw core, an organic and fluid base supporting her.

This artwork was made from studying a live model in wax. The wax was cast into bronze and the base carved from marble. Then, Ioanna made a silicon mold and a full wax version in order to work directly into the wax with heated tools. This technique brings you details such as the drips on the full form of the base.

Driplick was created in 2020 during the first Melbourne lockdown in a share house of artists based in Prahran.

Exhibited until February 5, 2023.
